AUTHORITIES have relaunched a campaign to protect wildflowers and wildlife on county road sides and discourage littering.
Dorset Council and Litter Free Dorset will once again encourage residents and visitors to celebrate Dorset’s roadsides with their ‘Love Your Verge’ campaign.
Love Your Verge is a county-wide campaign that aims to raise awareness of the council’s work to increase and maintain biodiversity in the verges, as part of the response to the climate and ecological emergency.
The Wildlife Trust already recognizes a number of verges in Dorset as Sites of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCI), a designation which is given to sites which have substantial geological and nature conservation value .
To help discourage littering, the campaign will include colorful signage installed throughout the county.
Cllr Ray Bryan, Dorset Council Highways portfolio holder, Travel and Environment, said: “The loss of natural habitats is a major threat to pollinators, who are essential for the growth of plants and crops. We are proud of the work done each year by Dorset’s Coast and Greenspace Service which helps to transform our verges and restore some of these vital habitats.
“By raising awareness of the important work to encourage and protect plants and wildlife alongside us, we hope more people will do their part by choosing to bring their trash home and dispose of it responsibly.”
