Victoria, Australia in pole position to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games

Victoria is in pole position to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games after talks opened with the Australian state on holding the quadrennial event Down Under for the second time in eight years.

An announcement from the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) on Tuesday revealed that a period of exclusive dialogue had begun between the governing body, the South East State of Australia and Commonwealth Games Australia.

The CGA and government will now draw up a bid for the Games with Birmingham in England, the venue for this year’s edition after the 2018 tournament was hosted by the Gold Coast.

Daniel Andrews, Premier of Victoria, said: “Victoria is Australia’s sporting state and, if awarded, the 2026 Commonwealth Games will demonstrate to the world a new way of running competition.

“We hope to have the majority of events in our regional cities – to show the best of Victoria, to create jobs, housing and infrastructure that will last for the long term.”

Australia has held the ‘Friendly Games’ five times, first in Sydney in 1938 before Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne and the Gold Coast were chosen to stage the multi-sport event.

Victoria, if chosen, will aim to show off a new way of hosting the Games with multiple locations across the state being utilized.

Tourism, Sport and Major Events Minister Martin Pakula added: “Hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Victoria will showcase our state globally, bring major economic benefits and support jobs in our great state.

When state capital Melbourne hosted the Commonwealth Games 16 years ago, the tournament was considered a huge success and various other sporting events occur regularly in the surrounding area.

This includes the Australian Open Tennis, Melbourne Grand Prix while the third Ashes Test was held in Melbourne in December.

Commonwealth Games Australia Chairman Ben Houston said: “Hosting major Games is a key pillar of the Commonwealth Games Australia strategic plan and given that our window to host the Games is 2026, we are delighted to join the CGF in an exclusive dialogue with Victoria to welcome the Commonwealth. Games again.

“Home Games provide immeasurable benefits to our member sports and athletes and we look forward to working with CGF and the Government of Victoria to bring a final plan for the Games to life.”

Victoria revealed plans to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in 2017 but then turned her attention to the 23rd Games and looks set to emerge victorious.
