A massive fire broke out at Ruby Pride Luxury Hotel in Secunderabad, Telangana on Monday night. The commissioner said that although casualties were reported, several people jumped from the building to save themselves.

At least eight people have died and seven have been admitted to hospital after a massive fire broke out at the Ruby Pride Luxury Hotel at Secunderabad in Telangana on Monday night. “The fire started in an electric scooter charging unit (showroom) on the ground floor, the smoke from which overwhelmed people staying on the first and second floors,” the commissioner said. The commissioner said that although casualties were reported, several people jumped from the building to save themselves. They were rescued by residents and rushed to hospital, he said, quoted by the ANI news agency.

A complaint has been filed against the owner of the building and the lodge where the fire broke out. “An FIR has been filed against the owners of the electric scooter showroom and the manager of the lodge,” said Chandana Deepti, DCP, North Zone, Hyderabad.

According to News 18, there were 25 occupants in the hotel when the fire engulfed the building late Monday. Official sources said the death toll is likely to rise.

Although the cause of the fire remains to be determined, the official said it was suspected that an electric bicycle or generator placed in the Ruby Motors showroom had exploded, starting the fire.

Expressing grief over the deaths of eight people in the fire, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office announced Rs 2 lakh ex gratia to the next of kin of each deceased and Rs. 50,000 to the injured.

The Telangana Chief Minister has also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 3 lakh, Mohd Mahmood Ali said.

Telangana Home Minister Mohd Mahmood Ali called the incident “very unfortunate”. He said: “Fire crews did their best to rescue people from the lodge, but due to heavy smoke some people died. Others were rescued from the lodge. We are investigating how the incident has occurred.”
